Two manned spacecraft from Earth approach and dock with the cargo vessels to stock up on water, food, oxygen, and fuel. Then the cargo ships begin their descent to Mars, heading for the landing zone at Mangala Vallis. A short time later, the manned spacecraft land and ten astronauts disembark at the site. They are the first group of colonists on Mars. Immediately, they start assembling the prefabricated units for the installations at Mangala Vallis. This will be the hub of the future Mars base. Rapidly a water extractor is put into place. Running on solar energy during the day and a battery at night, the extractor compresses atmospheric gases, extracts the water, then breaks down the carbon Terraforming dioxide into carbon monoxide and oxygen for heating in action purposes and fueling the Mars vehicles. Part of the oxygen produced is also used for breathing purposes. After a few weeks, the base is a CELLS-a Controlled Ecological Life Support System-that satisfies the basic human needs. Now the colonists can calmly look ahead to all that has to be accomplished during their four-year mission. MARS BETAT
